With a share of 50.2% of final energy consumption, the residential sector is the largest energy consumer in the Republic of Moldova, followed by the transportation sector with 26.4%, industry - 8.8%, trade and public services - 9.8% and agriculture - 4.8%.

From the residential sector, 64.4% of households heat with stoves and firewood, 18.3% are connected to centralized heating systems, and autonomous systems on gas, electricity, wood or coal - 16.5%.

The data is contained in the "Analysis of the current situation regarding space heating in the Republic of Moldova", a study that will form the basis of the Roadmap for Sustainable Heating, developed with the support of the World Bank within the project "National Assessment of Sustainable Heating Potential and Roadmap for Sustainable Heating". The recently presented document includes information on heat demand by sector and fuel type, heat supply infrastructure, building stock, current policies and programs, heat demand and fuel consumption forecasts, existing barriers and institutional framework.

Thus, there are 1.3 million dwellings in Moldova (574 thousand in urban areas and 751 thousand in rural areas), totaling 90.5 million m2. More than 70% of the buildings in Moldova were built in the period 1951-1990, 70.6% of the dwellings are detached houses, 43% of the dwellings are made of clay/saman, 27.6% of brick/stone, 19.8% monolith/cement, 8.8% fortran.

In 2021, Termoelectrica supplied thermal energy to 7.9 mln m2 of dwellings, which had a consumption of 824 MWh/year or an average consumption of 104 kWh/m2/year. For detached houses, the average annual energy consumption per square meter is 126 kWh. Note that the 3700 apartments with horizontal thermal energy distribution systems have an average consumption of only 59.3 kWh/m2/year.

According to Roger Coma Cunill, Senior Energy Specialist at the World Bank, the institution will support the Government of Moldova in improving energy security and reducing carbon emissions. The assistance includes two investment projects in the field of district heating totaling €153 million.

The project will also develop a Roadmap for Sustainable Warming in the Republic of Moldova, which will contain three scenarios for the transition to 2050. This will include the pace of building renovation, financing needs, investments, impacts and institutional support required. The roadmap will be in line with the National Energy Strategy and the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan.
