This step marks an important milestone in the operationalization of the platforms managed by OPEM, designed to ensure transparency, efficiency, and fair competition in the electricity market of the Republic of Moldova.

The creation and operationalization of short-term electricity markets is necessary to allow future coupling with neighboring electricity markets and, in particular, integration into the European Single Day-Ahead and Intraday Market (SDAC and SIDC).
According to the provisions of the Electricity Law, the electricity market consists of bilateral contracts and organized electricity markets, namely the Day-Ahead Market (DAM), the Intraday Market (IDM), the Balancing Market, and the Ancillary Services Market.
In Moldova, 96 companies hold electricity supply licenses, while currently only three suppliers operate in the competitive/unregulated market, with market shares of 1.52%, 0.14%, and 0.34%, respectively. Following the launch of organized markets, the market share of suppliers in the unregulated electricity market is expected to increase significantly.
The Energy Market Operator “OPEM” SRL, a subsidiary of SA OPCOM from Romania, was appointed as the electricity market operator in the Republic of Moldova by government decision at the beginning of 2024.
