The MoU will contribute to increasing Moldova's security of energy supply and to diversifying regional sources and supply routes.

Chisinau will propose a number of strategically important projects to be included in the Memorandum, including increasing the bi-directional natural gas transportation capacity on the Iasi - Ungheni - Chisinau pipeline and its extension through the construction of a gas transmission pipeline - (Chisinau Ring); interconnection of the power systems of the Republic of Moldova and Romania through the 400 kV Balti - Suceava Overhead Power Line, with the extension of the Balti and Suceava power stations; realization of fiber optic communication interconnections between the power systems on the existing 110 kV Husi - Cioara and 110 kV Țuțora - Ungheni power lines.

Moldelectrica will also access the balancing electricity market, managed by Transelectrica SA, and the centralized electricity markets (Next Day Market, Day-ahead Market) to be created in the Republic of Moldova will be coupled with those organized by the Romanian Designated Electricity Market Operator OPCOM SA.

At the same time, a joint system study to identify new electricity interconnection lines is to be prepared.

According to the Memorandum, a joint energy working group will be set up within the Romania-Republic of Moldova Intergovernmental Commission for Economic Cooperation, which will coordinate joint actions in order to successfully achieve the set objectives and avoid overlaps and/or possible bottlenecks.
