Today, Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu held a meeting with Her Excellency Petra Lärke, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to the Republic of Moldova, along with representatives of the Swedish Embassy in Moldova. The discussions focused on energy cooperation projects and opportunities to further expand the bilateral partnership.

During the talks, the parties reviewed ongoing projects in the energy sector, including cooperation with Swedfund on the development of the Waste-to-Energy project, which involves conducting prefeasibility studies for energy recovery from waste at CET-Nord and Termoelectrica. The project benefits from a grant of 9 million Swedish kronor.

Officials also discussed the development of energy communities in the Republic of Moldova, an initiative financially supported by Sweden and implemented through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In this context, the first pilot renewable energy community project was highlighted in the locality of Cociulia, which will install a 49 kW photovoltaic plant to reduce energy costs for community members.

Additionally, the Minister expressed appreciation for Sweden’s significant contribution to the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P), a fund through which important projects are financed to modernize thermal energy systems and improve energy efficiency in the Republic of Moldova.

Future cooperation directions were also discussed, including a draft Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Energy and the Stockholm Environment Institute, aimed at strengthening Moldova’s energy modeling capacities. This initiative will support the assessment of policy impacts under the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan and model decarbonization pathways through 2050, in line with European Union requirements.

Minister Dorin Junghietu emphasized the importance of the partnership with Sweden in supporting reforms in the energy sector and advancing Moldova’s energy transition.

In turn, Ambassador Petra Lärke reiterated Sweden’s commitment to continue supporting projects that contribute to energy security, energy efficiency, and the development of renewable energy in the Republic of Moldova.
