The Government has appointed the operator of the electricity market, LLC "Operatorul Pieței de Energia M" in the Republic of Moldova, which is a subsidiary of the Romanian "OPCOM". A decision to this effect was approved today at the Executive meeting.
OPEM will be the electricity trading platform and will operate the energy markets during the day and for the following day. It will give correct price signals to the market and will subsequently also allow the setting of differentiated electricity tariffs for final consumers.
The designation of the LLC "Energy Market Operator M" as a subsidiary of OPCOM will contribute to making the electricity market more efficient, promoting transparency and competition, managing risks and creating a favorable investment environment.
This decision also follows the joint efforts of the Moldovan and Romanian authorities to strengthen and integrate the electricity markets of the two countries in order to ensure a competitive and transparent environment in the energy sector, by signing a Memorandum on December 11, 2023.
At the same time, this action is included in the national action plan for accession to the European Union and is an essential step in Moldova's energy strategy until 2030.
The establishment of a market operator is also motivated by the interest of local producers of electricity, including from renewable energy sources, to create a competitive trading environment that will provide security and transparency in the electricity trading process and will increase investor confidence in the energy market in the Republic of Moldova.
