The Republic of Moldova has taken another significant step toward strengthening its energy security by initiating the procurement of a state-of-the-art Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The tender process, launched by USAID through the Moldova Energy Security Activity (MESA) in partnership with the Ministry of Energy, includes the acquisition of a 75 MW energy storage system and 22 MW internal combustion engines (ICE). This first phase of the tender focuses on procuring and installing a 30 MW component of the energy storage system. Potential bidders were informed today during an informational conference.

The contract is expected to be signed in the coming weeks, with the works scheduled for completion by the end of September 2026. The storage systems will be installed at CET Nord in Bălți, significantly contributing to the stability of the power grid and the integration of renewable energy sources.

The procurement aims to improve the reliability of Moldova’s electricity networks, facilitate energy trade with Romania, Ukraine, and the European market, and support the integration of locally produced renewable energy.

Additionally, the energy storage system will enhance energy management optimization and assist the grid operator, SA Moldelectrica, in maintaining network flexibility and stability amid fluctuations in electricity demand.

This project is made possible through an $85 million funding allocation from the United States Government via USAID. The announcement was made during U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Chișinău in May 2024 and is part of the total U.S. assistance of over $300 million aimed at strengthening Moldova’s energy security under the #MoldovaConnected initiative.

#MoldovaConnected seeks to advance Moldova's physical and market integration with Europe, boost domestic renewable energy generation, and strengthen the country’s energy independence.
