The Government approved in today’s meeting the ratification of the Grant Agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for the construction of the Bălți-Suceava Overhead Power Line, implemented under the project "Interconnection of the Electricity Networks between the Republic of Moldova and Romania, Phase II."

In addition to the new 400 kV overhead power line between the Republic of Moldova and Romania, which will interconnect the municipality of Bălți and the municipality of Suceava, a 400 kV electrical substation will also be built.

The €15.4 million grant, to be provided by the European Union through the Neighbourhood Investment Platform, will supplement loans amounting to €30.8 million from the EBRD and €30.8 million from the European Investment Bank. The total estimated value of the project is €77 million.

The project includes the construction, equipping, and commissioning of a new interconnection between the Republic of Moldova and Romania, consisting of a 400 kV overhead power transmission line linking the municipality of Bălți with the municipality of Suceava in Romania. Additionally, the project involves the reconstruction of the Bălți 400 kV electrical substation. The expected completion date for the works is December 2027.

The implementation of this investment project will contribute to the integration of Moldova’s electricity network into the European Union (EU) market through connections with the European ENTSO-E network, enhance the efficiency of the national energy sector, improve the stability and reliability of the local and regional power system, and increase opportunities for the development of additional energy sources, including renewable energy.

The mentioned Grant Agreement will enter into force after its ratification by Parliament.
