Another 60 residential buildings in the municipality of Chișinău will undergo energy-efficient renovations. The Cabinet of Ministers today approved the signing of a grant agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for the allocation of an investment grant from the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P) Fund, as well as the signing of another grant agreement with the EBRD for funding under the European Commission’s Neighbourhood Investment Platform, aimed at implementing the project "Optimization of the District Heating System in the Municipality of Chișinău."

The EBRD will provide a grant of €39.5 million to implement 57 pilot energy efficiency projects in buildings across Chișinău. These energy renovation projects will include thermal insulation of apartment blocks and modernization of internal heat distribution systems.

The implementation of the “Optimization of the District Heating System in the Municipality of Chișinău” project foresees the installation of 2,510 Individual Heating Points and the transition of 1,665 residential buildings to a horizontal heat distribution system.

Additionally, primary heating networks will be rehabilitated, and two new pumping stations will be constructed to improve the efficiency of the city’s thermal energy supply. It is estimated that around 300,000 households in the capital will benefit from this project.

These efforts will significantly reduce costs for consumers, cut CO2 emissions by 816,000 tonnes, save 4,600 MWh of primary energy over the next 20 years, and improve the quality of services provided to the population.

A total of €326 million will be invested in the modernization of the district heating system in Chișinău. Earlier this year, Parliament ratified the loan agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the EBRD for the implementation of this project. The EBRD's contribution of €143.5 million represents a significant part of the total project funding, while the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P) and the European Union’s Neighbourhood Investment Platform will support the project with grants of €15 million and €24.5 million respectively.
