Efforts to promote education on renewable energy, climate change, and sustainable lifestyles in Moldovan schools are ongoing. Recently, the Ministry of Energy, in partnership with UNDP Moldova representatives, agreed to organize a major conference for educators, scheduled for March 3-7, 2025. This event will play a key role in advancing education on renewable energy, climate change, waste management, and sustainable living by presenting the results of the testing and piloting of the educational project "Education in Energy and Climate." The project is supported by the European Union and UNDP Moldova.
During the conference, educators involved in the pilot project will have the opportunity to share their experiences and acquired materials, discuss the continued teaching of educational modules on renewable energy and climate change, and explore future educational concepts. The possibility of revising teaching materials for three optional disciplines—Environmental Education, Renewable Energy Sources, and Climate and Society—will also be examined. One proposal involves merging these subjects into a single comprehensive discipline and developing new teaching resources.
Cristina Pereteatcu, State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, emphasized the critical role of educational initiatives in shaping an informed and responsible generation to address energy and climate challenges.
“We thank our partners for their continued support of educational projects that contribute to forming a generation aware of energy and environmental challenges. It is essential for young people to understand the basics of renewable energy, efficient resource management, and the environmental impact of their actions. Through education, we can promote sustainable and responsible lifestyles for the betterment of society,” said Cristina Pereteatcu.
Throughout 2024, students in Moldova had the opportunity to study energy and climate concepts integrated into existing school subjects such as Physics, Geography, Civic Education, and Personal Development. They learned both theoretical and practical aspects, including the impact of geographical and atmospheric phenomena on the use of sustainable energy, the importance of waste separation and recycling, and ways to reduce their carbon footprint.
These educational modules were supported by the European Union and UNDP Moldova and implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Research, the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Environment, and the Presidency of Moldova.
The educational package developed for these topics included 84 teaching products—methodological guides and lesson plans—created by teachers and experts in energy and environmental fields.
