Republic of Moldova Sets New Record in Renewable Energy Production

The Republic of Moldova has taken another major step in the development of green energy: in April, 36% of the country’s total electricity consumption was covered by locally produced renewable sources. This marks an all-time record and a significant increase from March, when the share of locally produced green energy was approximately 23%.

According to available data, the total installed capacity of power plants using renewable sources surpassed 665 MW in April. Over the past four years, the capacity of renewable energy power plants has increased eightfold.

This positive development highlights the growing potential of renewable energy sources and underscores the importance of strengthening strategic investments in this sector.

At the same time, these results reflect the significant contribution of prosumers—households and companies that have installed photovoltaic panels under net metering and billing mechanisms—as well as eligible producers benefiting from support schemes such as fixed tariffs.

It is worth noting that April is, climatically, a favorable month for renewable energy production—moderate temperatures contribute to higher efficiency of photovoltaic plants compared to summer months. The average annual share of consumption covered by renewable sources in 2025 is estimated to exceed 20%, since winter months have less favorable weather conditions. Last year, the share of electricity from renewable sources reached 16.7% of total consumption, compared to 9.2% in 2023 and only 3.1% in 2020.

The Republic of Moldova remains committed to increasing the share of renewables in its national energy mix to 30% by 2030, in line with the goals set by European energy policies.

To support this process, the Ministry of Energy is actively promoting the development of new renewable production capacities. In 2024, tenders were launched for the construction of photovoltaic and wind parks with a total capacity of 165 MW, expected to attract investments of approximately €200 million. Financial offers are currently being evaluated, and the winners of the tender will be announced. The status of large eligible producers will be approved by a Government decision.

Furthermore, a second round of tenders is planned for October 2025, which will also include electricity storage solutions using batteries, thereby contributing to the stability and flexibility of the energy grid. Offers will be submitted by March 2026.
