During the first two days of April, consumers in the Republic of Moldova (the
the right bank of the Dniester River) will use gas from the United States of America, delivered via the Greek port of Alexandroupolis, in their households. This is a test volume of liquefied natural gas (LNG), imported by the joint-stock company Energocom from the Greek company DEPA.

"On Monday and Tuesday we will each purchase 14 thousand MWh of natural gas from the port of Alexandroupolis. In total, it is about 28 thousand MWh, which is equivalent to 2.6 million cubic meters of gas. This is gas needed for current consumption and the price is competitive. If we agree on a formula for the continuation of this collaboration, we will announce it to the citizens in the near future", said Victor Bînzari, acting director of SA Energocom.

The manager of SA Energocom noted that LNG gas is a separate industry from the extraction and transportation of gas that Moldovan citizens are used to.LNG gas, an alternative to Russian LNG, is liquefied at low temperatures, transported by sea and then regasified. Diversifying gas sources will further fortify the country's energy security, Victor Bînzari said, preparing market operators for any developments as the contract for transit of Russian gas through Ukraine expires at the end of 2024 and the neighboring country has said it will not negotiate an extension.

SA Energocom started working with DEPA in April 2023. Last year, the Greek company won several public tenders for the delivery of gas to the Republic of Moldova, both for current consumption and for storage in warehouses. On November 30 last year, SA Energocom and DEPA Commercial signed a Memorandum of Understanding, expressing their commitment to intensify cooperation in the supply of natural gas, including liquefied natural gas.
