Several German companies expressed interest in finding business partners for investments or subcontracting aimed at implementing advanced technologies in the fields of green energy and hydrogen in the Republic of Moldova and Romania.

State Secretary at the Ministry of Energy, Cristina Pereteatcu, presented in Bucharest the perspectives of the legal framework enabling the development of the hydrogen supply chain and the opportunities to invest in hydrogen use in the Republic of Moldova. The event was organized by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy of Germany and AHK Romania.

According to Cristina Pereteatcu, a dedicated hydrogen energy development strategy is not currently planned; however, renewable hydrogen is being considered for the post-2030 period in order to enhance energy security, support the integration of renewable energy sources, and contribute to the decarbonization of transport, wherever possible.

For this, it will be necessary to transpose the EU Directive on common rules for the internal markets in renewable gases, natural gas, and hydrogen, as well as to modernize the existing natural gas transmission and distribution infrastructure to allow the integration of renewable gases.

The State Secretary also presented one of the projects of interest for the Republic of Moldova in the field of hydrogen use. One such project is promoted by Vestmoldtransgaz, the natural gas transmission system operator, and involves increasing transport capacity and integrating hydrogen along the Trans-Balkan route in the context of the Vertical Corridor Initiative.

According to research, injecting hydrogen at low concentrations, from 5% to 20%, does not require major modifications to end-user equipment.

Romania’s energy strategy envisions the country playing the role of a regional hub for the production and transport of green hydrogen, particularly in cooperation with the Republic of Moldova. The Romanian market for green hydrogen is under development, and the country is expected to attract up to €775 million in long-term investments in electrolysis facilities.
