The Ministry of Energy has developed an action plan to ensure the energy independence of the Republic of Moldova, which was approved today during the Government meeting. The aim of the Plan is to eliminate dependence on energy resource supplies from the Russian Federation, both in the electricity sector and in the natural gas and petroleum products sectors. This objective was committed through the signing of a Letter of Intent between the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the European Commission on February 4, 2025.
The document outlines 22 actions related to the implementation of major infrastructure projects within established deadlines; increasing local electricity generation capacity, including from renewable sources; improving the efficiency of energy resource consumption; establishing natural gas and petroleum product stocks; increasing the flexibility of the electricity system; and coupling and integrating energy markets with those of the European Union by 2030.
The action plan integrates the energy sector into the broader vision of national security, in accordance with the provisions of the new national security strategy.
According to the Minister of Energy, Dorin Junghietu, the reforms and investment projects will be implemented with financial support from the European Union, which will provide financial assistance of up to 250 million euros.
"The document outlines a clear strategy to ensure that the Republic of Moldova can be decoupled from the insecurity related to natural gas supplies from the Russian Federation in the future, both in terms of using natural gas for heating and for electricity generation," said Dorin Junghietu.
It is worth mentioning that on February 4, 2025, the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the European Commission signed a Letter of Intent, representing a comprehensive financial package for the resilience and energy independence of Moldova, aiming to address the energy supply crisis and energy prices in the Republic of Moldova and to improve resilience and energy security through investments and reforms in the energy sector, as well as by completely eliminating any form of dependence on energy resource supplies from the Russian Federation.
