The State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, responsible for digitalization, Cristina Pereteatcu, participated on Thursday in the Green Future 2025 Conference, an event dedicated to accelerating the green transition. The conference was organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Moldova (AmCham Moldova), with the support of the European Union through the "Green Transition" program and UNDP.

The conference brought together opinion leaders, experts, and decision-makers to discuss innovative solutions and practical strategies for a sustainable future.

During a panel discussion, Cristina Pereteatcu highlighted the importance of Moldova's efforts in the green transition and digitalization process, emphasizing the country's alignment with the Energy Community Treaty 15 years ago, which facilitated the smooth transposition of European Union legislation, particularly in the field of energy sector digitalization.

"We started working earlier and aligned harmoniously with the established goals, also considering the specific characteristics of our region. The crises that Moldova has faced have pushed us to treat them as opportunities, and the increase in renewable energy production has happened very quickly. This demonstrates that the business sector is working hard in this area and is ready to support Moldova in reducing its dependence on expensive imported electricity," underlined Cristina Pereteatcu.

Throughout the conference, the State Secretary also addressed the Ministry of Energy's strategic vision regarding strengthening energy efficiency, which is almost impossible without innovation and digitalization.

"One of our main challenges is the energy infrastructure inherited from the Soviet period, which means that improving energy efficiency must start from this point and is an absolute priority since we lose over 50% of the energy consumed in buildings. However, modernizing the energy sector is not possible without digitalization and innovation," said Cristina Pereteatcu.

During the discussions, Cristina Pereteatcu also mentioned an important project for improving energy efficiency and reducing energy consumption — the implementation of the smart metering program. The installation of smart meters is part of a larger project implemented in partnership with UNDP Moldova, with financial support from the Government of Italy. The goal of this project is to build a more resilient energy infrastructure, increase operational efficiency, and reduce energy dependency, thereby aligning Moldova’s energy sector with European standards, emphasized Cristina Pereteatcu.

The State Secretary also stressed the importance of investments in strategic infrastructure, particularly in the construction of energy interconnection lines with Romania.

"The Vulcănești-Chișinău energy independence line is essential for developing competitive markets and integrating into the European Union energy market. This line will help us develop a free energy market," added Cristina Pereteatcu.

Cristina Pereteatcu mentioned that the Ministry of Energy is preparing to launch the Digital Transformation Strategy for the energy sector for public consultation in the coming period. The strategy will primarily focus on supporting the business environment. In this context, Cristina Pereteatcu encouraged business representatives to follow the Ministry’s work in the digitalization field and contribute with suggestions and recommendations.

At the end of the discussions, the State Secretary emphasized that the energy transition will create numerous jobs in Moldova, thereby supporting the country's economic development.
