Today, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova approved in the first reading an amendment to the loan agreement signed between the Republic of Moldova and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for the implementation of the "Natural Gas Supply Security" Project.
The approved amendments allow for the use of the first tranche, amounting to €100 million from the main agreement, for the purchase of electricity. These adjustments will not affect the repayment period of the tranche nor the financial conditions established in the initial agreement.
Given that, starting from January 1, 2025, Moldova’s electricity supply will directly depend on imports from the European Union and purchases on energy exchanges, SA "Energocom"—the entity responsible for electricity procurement and consumption management—will use approximately €48 million from the first tranche to purchase electricity. This amount is already included in the State Budget Law for 2025.
The "Natural Gas Supply Security" Project is being implemented between 2022 and 2025 and benefits from a €300 million loan granted by the EBRD.
The Ministry of Energy will continue to actively cooperate with international partners to strengthen the country’s energy security and ensure a stable and predictable framework for electricity and natural gas supply.
