During a meeting of the Smart Metering Working Group, representatives from the Ministry of Energy, UNDP Moldova, and distribution operators discussed the strategy for allocating a new batch of smart meters. The event took place at the ministry's headquarters and was chaired by State Secretary Cristina Pereteatcu and UNDP Moldova Deputy Resident Representative Seher Ariner.
By the end of 2027, thanks to funding from the Government of Italy, the total number of installed smart meters will reach 100,000, representing 7% of the total 1.4 million electricity consumers. Between 2023 and 2025, 35,000 smart devices were delivered to distribution operators, which are currently being installed this year in the North and Center-South distribution zones.
“Smart metering is a necessary step toward modernizing the energy infrastructure and ensuring more efficient and transparent consumption. The collaboration between the Ministry, UNDP, and distribution operators is vital to accelerate the expansion of this project so that more consumers can benefit from modern technologies,” emphasized Cristina Pereteatcu at the beginning of the event.
The working group also discussed the development of a platform that would allow consumers to access electricity usage data based on time and consumption patterns. The platform would enable users to view hourly, daily, and monthly consumption through interactive graphs, estimate bills in real time, receive automatic notifications in case of excessive consumption, and get personalized recommendations for reducing usage.
Seher Ariner, UNDP Moldova Deputy Resident Representative, highlighted the contribution of UNDP and the Government of Italy in promoting inclusive digital solutions.
“Through this project, we demonstrate how technological innovation can support sustainable development and help citizens adopt more responsible energy behaviors,” noted Seher Ariner.
