July 10, 2025, Cimișlia – Cable installation works have started on the Vulcănești–Chișinău Energy Independence Line, in the area of Congaz village. At the same time, the construction of the 400 kV Vulcănești–Chișinău transmission line is progressing steadily. Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu visited the construction site in the Cimișlia district.
According to updated data, in just the last three weeks, 112 foundations have been concreted in the Cimișlia district out of a total of 117 planned, with 3 of them completed recently. 55 pylons have already been assembled, 41 of which were completed in the past three weeks. 25 pylons were erected along the route in July.
“This strategic project is a vital investment in Moldova’s energy independence and security, and part of our effort to increase interconnection with the European ENTSO-E grid. The 400 kV Vulcănești–Chișinău line is the backbone of our energy security. The progress on the ground, despite the high temperatures, reflects the dedication and commitment of the teams involved. It proves that Moldova can do it,” said Minister Dorin Junghietu.
The overhead power line will be 157 kilometers long. More than 500 pylons and 1,500 kilometers of conductors will create a strategic connection between the southern and central regions, crossing eight districts and 35 localities. Depending on the grid’s operating regime, the line could cover over 50% of energy demand during peak consumption periods.
In parallel with the advancement of construction on the 400 kV Vulcănești–Chișinău line, significant progress is also being made on the modernization of the high-voltage infrastructure at the Chișinău Substation. In the past three weeks, a high-performance monitoring system for autotransformers has been delivered, allowing real-time supervision of equipment status and helping prevent operational risks. Additionally, metal supports for the installation of high-voltage circuit breakers have been delivered—key elements for the substation’s safety and operation.
Also during this period, 330 kV disconnectors were installed, and major progress was made on the construction of the autotransformer foundations, including concreting the tracks, welding rails, reinforcing and pouring concrete into basins, as well as backfilling and preparing the platform for equipment installation.
The construction project for the Vulcănești–Chișinău Overhead Power Line (OHL) is being implemented by the Government of Moldova through the Ministry of Energy and UCIPE (Energy Projects Implementation Unit), with support from the World Bank. The direct beneficiary is the state-owned enterprise Moldelectrica.
The works are carried out under the Electricity System Development Project, aimed at ensuring the country’s energy security. The project is financed by the World Bank, with a total value of 61 million euros, of which approximately 27 million euros are allocated for the construction of the Vulcănești–Chișinău line.
